Ever wondered how pathfinding works in games? Wondered how electronic music is made? Explorable Explanations aims to scratch that particular itch.

There are online sandboxes in categories as diverse as chemistry, programming all the way to civics and social science. Hosted on the author’s sites, it provides a jump off point for experimentation and fiddling.

It’s a great idea to make these often hidden sandboxes more discoverable. I think if I had access to these resources at the beginning of my programming journey as it would have allowed me to understand concepts more quickly. I like to learn by doing.

My favourite sandbox (as an enthusiastic but time-poor electronic music producer) is the one offered by Ableton, a popular music production software developer:

Try out making beats in a time-synced grid with the Ableton experience

I found myself replicating the fun I had when I first tried an Akai sampler years ago! Seriously, give it a go.

What was your favourite experiment? Let me know in the comments.
